For consumers watching television has become much easier over the last decade. No longer do you have to be placed right in front of your TV to watch your favorite television show during is specified time on the schedule. Now, viewers can use services like TiVo, or DVR functionality with their favorite cable or satellite provider to watch their favorite shows on their own terms.

And even if you miss your favorite shows, or forget to set your DVR to record them, viewing episodes on the web is easier than ever before. However, according to Nielsen's Consumer Usage Report, 73% of American's still watch their favorite content through the old-fashioned traditional television set, and former President of TiVo Morgan Guenther sees that trend remaining for a long time.

"We've always felt that the living room and that big 52-inch screen is where you go to consume the content you really love, and I don't see that changing in the short term," he says. Guenther now the CEO of Next Issue Media does admit, "the growth opportunity is on the mobile side. From a streaming perspective there's no question those services are expanding significantly."

Two of the biggest examples of this are HBO Go and Watch ESPN, two apps available for mobile and tablet computing devices that make watching content on the go easier than ever before. Both apps are wildly popular, but the services are still tied to traditional cable subscriptions. Guenther notes we may see a change in this format going forward.
