Microsoft recently said it would sell 400 million Windows 8 devices by July 1. On the face of it, such numbers sound impossible to reach. Can Microsoft really do it?
Keith Lorizio, Microsoft Vice President of U.S. Sales & Marketing, said in an interview with Beet.TV that by its conservative estimate, Microsoft will sell 400 million Windows 8 devices by July 1, nine months after the release of Windows 8 on October 26.
He added that within 90 days of the Windows 8 release, there will be 100,000 apps in the Windows 8 Store. At the moment, by my count, there are fewer than 2,200 apps in the store, so getting to 100,000 in three months after launch would be an enormous ramp-up.
How likely is it that Microsoft will sell 400 million Windows 8 devices by July 1? Not very likely. To understand why, let’s take a look at Lorizio’s logic. He starts off by saying that there are potentially something over a billion customers for Windows 8. Then he says that Microsoft will be able to reach its goal of at least 400 million in sales in eight months because Microsoft has “massive distribution.”
