Commuters will soon be able to enjoy a glitch-free ride on the metro trains, with Delhi Metro introducing wifi technology for operating the signals for its trains.
This cord-less system will not only enhance the efficiency of the system but will also not hamper the train operations in case of thefts of the electrical cords that transmit electricity on the metro lines presently. The train operation and control will be completely automatic enabling the new trains faster and free from technical glitches.
“Currently, this role is being performed by the driver of the train. With the new system coming into place, a particular time will be allotted for a specific station for halting the train, which could be re-adjusted accordingly. With the installation of this new software, the role of driver will be that of the facilitator for the commuters,” said Raj Kumar, Director Operations, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).
With the advent of technology, from the next phase, the advanced radio technology will be incorporated into the Delhi Metro’s operations. “Phase III will make use of the advanced Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) system, with this Delhi Metro will join the very few metro rail systems in the world to use this advanced system. With the introduction of this new technology, not only will the trains receive the signals automatically, but the opening and closing of doors will also be made automatic. With this, the function of the driver will be transformed into a facilitator for the commuters. Though the driver will initially be present inside his cabin to monitor the functioning of this new technology, he/she will be dispensed in a phased manner to act as a facilitator,” added Kumar.
