First Responders rely on PDAs

Palm announced that the National Library of Medicine, the largest medical library in the world and an organization within the National Institutes of Health, has created a free application for emergency responders called Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders that runs on Palm Treo smartphones and handhelds. Emergency responders use Palm products paired with the WISER application as wireless or stand-alone reference tools for gathering information on hazardous substances and supporting comprehensive decision support. The solution serves as a reliable alternative to the current paper-based systems or outdated technology that emergency responders often contend with on a scene.

Samsung Q1 UMPC means business

Samsung Electronics has big plans for its tiny Q1 ultramobile PC. Despite a less than warm initial reception for the diminutive PC category by analysts, Samsung said its Q1 UMPC has exceeded its expectations, particularly for businesses. And now it’s raising the bar. Samsung, which had not sold a Samsung-brand PC in the United States for several years before the May 2006 launch of the Q1, expects to announce soon at least one deal to sell quantities of the $1,100 UMPC to a corporation. Meanwhile, depending on the success of the device, its future plans include at least one Q1 follow-on and possibly offering Samsung-brand notebooks again in the United States.

Belkin’s flagship N1 Wireless Router has been honored with LAPTOP Magazine’s Editors’ Choice Award in its August 2006 issue, currently on newsstands. SMC ships Skype Wi-Fi phone

AMD to acquire ATI

Advanced Micro Devices will acquire graphics processor maker ATI Technologies in an effort to emerge as a more formidable supplier of chips for business computers. AMD has traditionally worked with multiple partners whose chips can be used with its processors to build PCs. But the company intends to use the tie-up, announced on July 24, to deliver more tightly integrated processors and supporting chip sets, in an effort to lure more businesses.

United Online announced that it is offering its PrivatePhone and NetZero Voice phone services through Best Buy stores as part of an extended marketing alliance with Best Buy. As part of the agreement, Best Buy stores are now distributing CDs that give customers the opportunity to sign up for NetZero Voice Unlimited at a special rate of $9.95 per month, a five dollar savings off the regular price of the service. In addition, the first month of the NetZero Voice service will be complimentary for those who sign up through Best Buy. PrivatePhone demo CDs will be distributed as well.
