A clever piece of software allows Pocket PC Phone Edition devices to receive notifications of new emails via SMS and then pull them off of an email server. PushMail was written to allow users to be able to receive emails over the air, even without a more sophisticated infrastructure provided by a Microsoft Exchange Server. The software relies on the user mailbox’s ability to send or forward a message to a SMS gateway when a new email arrives. PushMail hooks into the SMS queue and is notified when a new SMS arrives. This will cause it to analyze the SMS and if it matches the configured sender’s id then it will perform a Send/Receive operation. This is transparent to the user, and the application doesn’t actually has to be running, since the native component will instantiate it when a SMS notification arrives.
