For those of you who might have been curious about the general state of things here at ZATZ this week, rest assured: it is indeed possible to recover an Exchange server from backups. It’s not easy, but it is possible. Our Exchange server died a miserable, horrible death on Monday evening.
It was our oldest server, mostly because we’d been avoiding the challenge of upgrading it. But time caught up with the old beast, and it died hard. We installed a replacement box (with seven times the capacity and speed), and it took us most of the next day or so to recover the mailbox stores and Active Directory. It was fun. But it looks like we’re back, and OutlookPower Magazine will have a hell of a good article in a week or so, telling all the details (many of which were very obscure and a bitch to discover).
There may still be a few ups and downs over the next couple of days as we clean up all the residual gunk from the restore, but it looks like it’s back to business as usual!
