Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones opens on May 16, 2002. We here at PalmPower are very excited. Judging by the number of Star Wars related applications there are, we imagine a good number of you are pretty excited too. If you’re not, you might as well turn back now, because the software below is definitely for hardcore fans.
Okay, if you’re still with me, let’s hop into our Republic cruiser (pictured in Figure A), and take off into the universe of Star Wars applications for the Palm OS.
.FIGPAIR A Swoop into action!
.H1 Guides
With Episode II mere days away, it might be a good time to brush up on the events of The Phantom Menace. You could pop in the DVD, which is what I’m going to do, but if you don’t have time, software developer Michael Ryan has a solution. At http://www.eurocool.com/author/?author=9158, you’ll find his Phantom Menace Guide, complete with graphics, as shown in Figure B.
.FIG B Brush up with the Phantom Menace Guide.
You can read all about the characters and locations from the movie and learn about the different orders of the Force.
Michael Ryan also offers a Jedi Council Guide (at http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?prodID=3622), pictured in Figure C.
.FIG C Get up close and personal with the members of the Jedi Council.
In The Phantom Menace, about all we learned about the twelve members of the council was that they enjoyed comfortable chairs. Finally, in Episode II, we get to see them in action, as they engage in battle against the Trade Federation’s army of Battle Droids, as shown in Figure D.
.FIGPAIR D On Geonosis, the Jedi go into battle.
So, while you may be familiar with the likes of Mace Windu and Yoda (pictured in Figure E), how much do you really know about the other members of the council, such as Ki-Adi-Mundi, Kit Fisto, or Plo Koon.
.FIGPAIR E Mace Windu and Yoda see trouble ahead.
The Jedi Council Guide provides information about the members’ backgrounds and provides pictures so that you can put a face to a name.
You can’t view the graphics, however, if you use the program with any DOC reader other than TealDOC (at http://www.tealpoint.com/softdoc.htm). This is true for both the Phantom Menace Guide and the Jedi Council Guide.
.H1 Wisdom
As we walk down the road of life, we all face difficult choices. Perhaps our choices aren’t as severe as whether or not to join the Dark Side, but they’re important nonetheless. It certainly couldn’t hurt to consult the wisdom of the great and powerful Jedi.
In Pete Moss’s Yoda 1.2.1 application, pictured in Figure F, Yoda the Jedi Master offers you Jedi Wisdom as well as answers (much like a Magic 8 ball) to your difficult questions.
.FIG F Great wisdom, Yoda offers.
But there’s even more wisdom to be had if you also download Jedi 1.0.1, pictured in Figure G.
.FIG G The power and wisdom of the Force can be yours.
Jedi 1.0.1 offers Jedi Wisdom from all the Jedi Masters in the Star Wars movies. All quotes are taken straight from the Star Wars movies. Both applications are Freeware, and the source is included. You can find them at http://users.ev1.net/~bantha/palm/.
.H1 Synopsis
Many of the events in the Star Wars prequels were referenced in the original trilogy, in a kind of reverse foreshadowing. Things like the Clone War and Anakin Skywalker’s transformation into Darth Vader were alluded to but never shown until now. To revisit the original Star Wars movie, you can check out the Star Wars Synopsis available at http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?prodID=5891. Written by George Lucas back in 1973, this is the first telling of the story that was destined to become one of Hollywood’s greatest epics.
Another way to brush up on your Star Wars facts is to check out a TealInfo database called Star Wars: I. You can find it at http://www.eurocool.com/review/?show=9747. This reference for Star Wars fans provides basic information on characters, droids, weapons, locations, etc. It requires TealInfo from TealPoint Software at http://www.tealpoint.com/softinfo.htm.
.H1 Adventure
Now how about getting into the action yourself? With Star Wars: A Jedi Awakens v1.5, you can enjoy an illustrated, interactive adventure based on the Star Wars universe. The plot description says, "You awaken to a sense of danger and go out to investigate… do you fight or flee? You make the choice." It features 21 comic-book style illustrations, as shown in Figure H.
.FIG H You become the Jedi in this interactive adventure.
You can find it at http://www.freewarepalm.com/authors/g_irk.shtml.
.H1 Humor
Sometimes it’s best not to ask questions. In Asciimation v1.1 (at http://217.215.32.89/smileware/), you can watch a part of the original Star Wars movie in animated ASCII graphics, as shown in Figure I.
.FIG I Watch Star Wars as rendered in animated ASCII graphics.
The full width is viewable on a Sony Clie, and on any other Palm OS device, you can tap and drag sideways to see the sides of the movie.
What’s the point? Don’t ask me.

.H1 May the Force be with you
Now you can load up your Palm handheld with all this fun Star Wars software and impress all the other fans as you line up on opening day. Maybe I’ll see you there. I’ll be the guy in the Darth Maul t-shirt with the plastic double-bladed lightsaber.
