The debate rages on in the comments of my previous post, "I'm Sorry, The Windows 8 Hate Just Doesn't Make Sense". The perceived backlash against Windows 8, and the stubborn resistance to abandoning Windows XPwhich Microsoft Microsoft will officially stop supporting next monthled me to go back in time and see how past versions of Windows were greeted out of the gate.

People don't like change. I stressed that point at the beginning of my previous article. It really doesn't matter if the change is good or badif it improves efficiency and productivity, or is change seemingly just for the sake of change. The fact is that many will complain about it simply because it's different. The interesting thing, however, is that over time that "change" becomes the new normal, and by the time the next version of Windows comes out those same people who complained about the change when it launched will instead complain about that feature or capability being altered or removed.

Change is inevitableespecially when we're talking about technology. Many people complain that Microsoft cranks out new versions of Windows too fast, and is just launching new versions to try and squeeze more money out of its customers. They also whine about the audacity of ending support for Windows XPan OS that is more than a decade old.

Contrast Microsoft with its primary rivals. Since October of 2009 when Windows 7 was released, Apple Apple has introduced three major versions of OS X, and no longer supports OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" which was launched in 2009. Ubuntu has released eight new versions of Ubuntu Linux since October of 2009 (currently 7the 8th comes out in April), and it stopped officially supporting Ubuntu Linux 9.10 "Karmic Koala" in 2011 after only two years.

Read also:

Microsoft offers users $ 100 toward Windows 8 devices with XP trade-in offer (ZDNet)

5 Windows 8 Tips & Tricks (Gotta Be Mobile)

Windows 8.1 Update 1: what's in Microsoft's latest Windows update (TechRadar UK)

Explore: 134 additional articles.
