<p>In an effort to give old pay phone booths a fresh purpose, RCN Business Services is working with DAS Communications, LCC International Inc. and Pacific Telemanagement Services to implement free WiFi in downtown Boston.</p><p>The unique partnership, announced at the WiFi and Small Cells North America Conference at the Hyatt Regency Boston this week, is aimed at increase the quality of service and decrease costs by connecting small cells to the core network, which will be made possible by the backhaul provided by RCN.</p><p>"The partnership is giving new life to telephone booths that have almost become extinct due to the evolution of the cell phone," said Jeff Carlson, general manager of RCN Boston. "Small cell and WiFi technology deployed through this partnership is another step toward delivering high quality wireless by lighting up hot spots in Boston using RCN's unparalleled fiber network."</p><p>The partners will be launching FreeBostonWiFi in a pair of Boston locations in union with a trial with Boston's Department of Innovation and Technology and will expand deployment by mid-summer, according to a press release.
